The seminar had the participation of Assoc.Prof.PhD. Nguyen Anh Thu - Vice Rector and Director of VEPR; Assoc.Prof.PhD. Pham The Anh - Chief Economist, VEPR; Assoc.Prof.PhD. Nguyen Duc Thanh - Senior Economist, Former Director of VEPR; PhD. Nguyen Tri Hieu - Finance and Banking Expert; PhD. Pham Sy Thanh - Director of VEPR's Chinese Economic Research Program (VCES).

The seminar attracted the special attention of international and domestic organizations in the field of economics and development, law-makers, policy makers, related state management agencies, businesses, entrepreneurs, researchers, consulting organizations and the press agencies. 

 

Delivering the opening remark at the seminar, Assoc.Prof.PhD. Nguyen Anh Thu said that it will provide scientific information to state management agencies and economic experts about the economic situation in this epidemic period and recommendations for economic recovery after the epidemics.

 

 

After that, Assoc.Prof.PhD. Pham The Anh - Chief Economist, VEPR presented the report. He said that Vietnam's economic growth in the first quarter of 2020 reached 3.82% compared to the same period last year, lowering in all 3 economic sectors.

VEPR forecasts that this year's state budget revenue may not meet the plan due to many reasons: Decline in business results and workers' income and tightening of investment and consumption. Meanwhile, total spending may increase beyond the estimate to minimize the impact of the disease.

VEPR recommends that the Government should adopt appropriate policies and develop different policies responding to scenarios at different levels of the epidemic.

After that, PhD. Nguyen Tri Hieu - Finance and Banking Expert said that in the optimistic perspectives, Vietnam and the world can control the epidemic by the end of June, the economy could start to recover from the beginning of the third quarter.

PhD. Pham Sy Thanh - VCES Director expressed his caution when making forecasts of Vietnam's economic growth in 2020. According to him, the current support solutions are only the disease response policies, not taking into account post-epidemic support options.

 

 

In addition to updating the economic situation in the first quarter made by experienced and knowledgeable experts, the VEPR Quarterly Report provided objective analysis, evaluation, independent assessments and produced reliable predictive scenarios and valuable policy recommendations.
